Helping patients with diabetes

We are helping diabetic patients by signposting them to a programme that helps patients to improve control of their diabetes, weight and blood pressure.

We are inviting eligible patients to  information evenings about the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Remission Programme, explaining the process and benefits and answering any questions.

To be eligible for the programme, which is run by Xyla, you need to be a Lakeside patient, within a certain weight category and have had your diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes within the last six years.

So far up to 120 patients have signed up for the programme. They have meal replacements which add up to 800 calories per day, plus ongoing support, monitoring and coaching. After the 12-week phase they have a further nine months of support, helping them to adopt and maintain healthy eating and exercise. The results are impressive, with most patients reducing their weight, sugar and blood pressure, and putting their diabetes into remission.

Dr Sanjay Gadhia said: ‘Once they are referred they have a one to one assessment with Xyla and if there are no problems they start with the meal replacement and lifestyle changes. Everyone I have referred who has completed the programme has benefitted from it. Within seven days their sugar levels start to reduce. Within 10 to 14 days blood pressure starts to fall and many patients are finding their diabetes starts to go into remission.

'It is a carefully monitored programme with support from coaches and group forums for those taking part. These information evenings are a great way for us to tell patients about the programme and its benefits and after coming along 90% of them sign up.'

Patient, Mr Stephen Rogers said: ‘I would recommend it. It took me years to get the weight on and it has taken 12 weeks to lost most of it already.  I couldn’t have done it without this programme and I feel so much better. I’ve got more energy, I am walking more, I’m getting 10,000 steps in again, I am sleeping better. I feel like a different person. I have lost two stone. It really has changed the way I look at food.12 weeks of your life is not a long time to wait and I don’t know anyone who hasn’t got good results. It is the best thing I have ever done.’

Upcoming dates

The next information evenings are on Wednesday 26 March and Wednesday 4 April from 6.30pm to 8pm, with more taking place throughout the year.

We are sending out invitations to patients who are eligible to attend. If you are interested in attending and haven’t received an invitation then please get in touch via Anima or contact reception after 10am and we can check your eligibility and register your interest.
